Now, you’ve probably heard all the good things about fractional laser treatment – like how the treatment helps in reducing wrinkle lines, acne scars, stretch marks or improving the texture and tone of your skin. (If you don’t know much about this laser treatment, click here to know more about them.)

But, do you know about the after effects of fractional CO2 laser? In this blog, we are going to cover the possible side effects your skin may experience after the procedure. This way, you’ll be informed about them and know what works for you!

Possible Side-Effects of Fractional CO2 Laser

Fractional laser is known to a popular treatment because of its reputation for being safe and effective. However, this does not mean it suits any person’s skin type and condition.

To avoid any skin reaction, your doctor or dermatologist will analyse the physiology of your skin before going forward with the treatment. That way, they can take precautionary measures and prevent any long-term implications.

Side effects rarely do occur but here are some of the concerns your skin may experience after.

You may experience redness or tingling

If you have undergone a fractional CO2 laser treatment, you’ll notice redness or a tingling sensation at the treated area. This is a temporary effect that generally occurs within 48 hours, but it will fade away.

People who experience blushing or redness on their skin easily are susceptible to this side effect. You will also notice some stinging at the treated area in case of excessive exposure to the laser light.

You may experience pain

If it is your first time, you may experience slight discomfort during the procedure. This is probably because of the burning effect of the laser. Subsequently, patients hardly experience any discomfort or pain – as mentioned by various testimonials on different websites.

A layer of numbing cream will be applied before the start of the laser treatment. Everyone has a different threshold for pain. Do inform our doctor should you feel any intense pain during treatment.

 You may experience peeling

After the treatment, you may also notice some skin peeling at the treated area. This peeling of the skin is normal and natural. This doesn’t necessarily mean that your skin is damaged, in fact, it signifies the removal of dull skin and revealing the new skin underneath.

The peeling will subside within a couple of days as long as you stay away from the sun and keep your skin cool to avoid further peeling.

You may experience swelling

Another side effect is swelling. This usually occurs around the treatment area.

Our doctor advises you to apply a moisturiser after the procedure to minimise the effects. The swelling tends to subside within 3 days.

You may experience spots

Spots or blemishes are also one of the side effects of laser treatment. These spots are generally seen as a minor reaction to the laser, and there is no need to worry if you see them.

This is a result of the treatment taking effect on your skin. They will fade away gradually after one week or more as well.

Again, our doctor will be able to assess the condition of your skin, if it’s improving or not.

What can I do to avoid the after-effects from a Fractional CO2 laser?

Many people with fine lines and wrinkles or even acne want to give fractional CO2 laser treatment a try. However, the fear of experiencing any complications may be their biggest obstacle.

As mentioned before, there are slight side effects that may occur, but nothing that can be classified as dangerous or life threatening.

After the session, our doctor will recommend you a customised skin care plan. This is to protect your skin from any extreme inflammation or dryness that can occur due to the laser exposure.

Depending on your skin type, our doctor may also suggest some skincare products or an over-the-counter medicine that can be taken after the treatment to avoid any swelling or redness.

Other advice that the doctor may give include:

  • Applying sunblock,
  • Applying moisturiser,
  • Cooling your skin to avoid dryness or peeling, or
  • Avoid peeling scabs
